Willow Finds Confidence
Bobbie Lee, our first Alabama-based author, has teamed with Huntsville illustrator Devin Leigh to produce the latest in our stable of children’s books, Willow Finds Confidence. Look for it to be published in late June or early July.
What is The Chicago Manual of Style?
If your work was edited by us, at some point you will have seen a reference in our comments that looked something like “CMOS 6.14,” shorthand for a section and paragraph in The Chicago Manual of Style.
Our first decision at Warner House Press (aside from the name!) was to standardize on a single source for editing decisions. After researching several options, we chose The Chicago Manual of Style. It provides guidance on just about every aspect of writing, editing and publishing, from how front matter in a book is organized to capitalization rules for offices and titles. Additionally, it is less apt to be swayed by passing fads in usage and vocabulary, unlike the AP Stylebook.
Authors and editors should have a copy at hand when working, either physical or online via subscription. We prefer a physical copy since it is well-organized topically and a snap to search after a few weeks of familiarization.
You may have noticed the “just about” qualification above. Although our goal was to use a single source, one of the biggest omissions in the CMOS is the proper formatting of scriptural references. For that, we use The SBL Handbook of Style.
Other books that you may consider adding to your shelf include Byran A. Garner’s The Chicago Guide to Grammar, Usage, and Punctuation and Garner’s Modern English Usage. Both are great for reading and reference.
